Trafffic Calming Open House - June 24

Image
Earlier in the year the county held 2 public open houses, along with an online questionnaire to begin their public engagement of the upcoming traffic calming measures for the Glen Allan community. Following this up in May there were 2 stakeholder input sessions where a smaller group was asked to give more detailed feedback and discussion on what some of the priorities and goals for the calming should be. This process culminates Wednesday, the 24th of June from 5-8pm at the Community Centre with the County's public open house, where they will be presenting their top options for what changes will take place throughout the neighbourhood (not just major intersections, but throughout the whole glen Allan community). Following the open house the recommendations will then go to council for final approval and construction will begin. The upcoming open house will be the final opportunity for the public to have input and give opinions to help in deciding how our community will look by ne

Bouncy Fun!

Image
Thank you to the Strathcona County Information and Volunteer Centre (IVC) for bringing bouncy castles to Gilmore Park on Saturday, June 6. This community pop-up event was another great example of why Strathcona County is a great place to live, work and play!  The sun was shining with community shining the brightest as neighbours had an opportunity to connect with one another at a local gathering spot. IVC will be at the Colchester Family Fun Day Saturday, June 13 from 3-7pm for more bouncy fun.  Watch for IVC at various locations throughout the summer! www.ivcstrathcona.org For more resources and opportunities to create connections with neighbours visit www.cultivatingcommunities.net

Play It Forward

Image
Strathcona County Parent Link Centre is coming to Gilmore Park Wednesday, June 3rd from 5-7pm to kick-off the Play it Forward Program with a BBQ celebration.   Each year they leave a bucket of sand toys at parks around Strathcona County for the summer.  As residents it is our job to care for the toys and ensure our neighbourhood is a better place to play. We encourage everyone to come out and connect with neighbours at this fun, free, family-friendly event!

Summer Camp in Gilmore Park

Local Glen Allan resident, Scott Hebert is offering an outdoor sport and skill summer camp for children ages 4-7 and 8-11 in Gilmore Park for the weeks of July 20-24th and 27-31st. Scott is a physical education specialist with 6 years experience in the classroom (currently teaching in Fort Saskatchewan). He is the winner of the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013 for his elementary physical education program (an award given to the top 20 teachers in Alberta).  Scott has over 20 years experience as an athlete and a coach at various levels in various disciplines.  He has a true passion for physical education and sport and would love to share it with the community. The camp for 4-7 year olds would run July 20-24th from 9AM-12PM and would cost $120. Time can vary if the want/need is there. It would be excellent for kids who are getting into the swing of school for the upcoming school year, kids who love to move and meet new friends and great prep for physical educa

Traffic Calming Survey

Stay tuned for a summary of the feedback.

Help Shape Your Community!

Image
In the upcoming months residents will be working with Strathcona County and ISL Engineering and Land Services, Soles and Company and Boulevard Transportation to develop a traffic calming plan for north Glen Allan. Speed data collected by Strathcona County on Glenbrook Boulevard in 2014 shows that, at times, traffic is moving faster than the road has been designed to accommodate. You can help address this safety concern, by j oining an interactive family-friendly workshop Wednesday, March 25th from 6:30-8:30pm or Thursday, March 26th from 9:30-11:30am upstairs at the Glen Allan Recreation Centre.   Because traffic calming on one street has the potential to affect surrounding streets, the traffic calming process will consider other roads in the area in addition to Glenbrook Boulevard, therefore anyone who resides or commutes in and around that area is encouraged to attend.

Graffiti in our Park

Image
It is disheartening when graffiti appears on 5 different pieces of park property which volunteers worked tirelessly to have installed for the betterment of their community.  Although we don't wish to give the artist the attention he/she is looking for, this blog post is to let you know that this form of vandalism is occurring in the Glen Allan neighbourhood in Sherwood Park.  By tagging public property, it becomes costly for tax payers and property owners.    Here are some ways to protect property from graffiti: Enhanced Lighting Improving lighting in your backyard (ideally motion sensors) serves as a natural form of surveillance. Keep it Clean Broken fences, litter, overgrown landscaping, etc. invite delinquent behavior.  Take part in keeping your property clean as well as joining the Gilmore Park Community League in their annual Pitch In Clean-up Event to maintain a positive effect on the community by assisting in deterring graffiti vandalism.
