Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Sherwood Park’s Community Infrastructure
SHERWOOD PARK, AB – Today, the Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State for Democratic Reform and Member of Parliament for Edmonton—Sherwood Park, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for upgrades to Gilmore Park under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“I am proud to see Sherwood Park benefit from our Government’s support for community facilities and spaces,” said Minister Uppal. “This investment at Gilmore Park will not only create jobs in our community through landscaping and playground replacement opportunities, but it will also help to enhance the safe play spaces our families and children count on.”
The Harper Government’s investment of $52,850 will enhance the programs and services found at Gilmore Park. This investment will allow for the replacement of playground equipment and completion of additional landscaping. These improvements will result in an enhanced recreational experience for community members and visitors alike.
"The Gilmore Park revitalization project in Sherwood Park has sparked a greater sense of community, encouraging neighbours to gather, get to know one another, and look out for each other,” said Tammy Greidanus, President of the Gilmore Park Community League. “Thanks to the federal assistance from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund and municipal support, we are able to build not only a better park, but a legacy of community spirit.”
"We were also pleased to support this worthwhile community driven initiative through our new Community Partnership process,” said Her Worship Linda Osinchuk, Mayor of Strathcona County. “It is a shining example of what can be accomplished when different levels of government cooperate to revitalize existing infrastructure such as this neighbourhood park."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
