Graffiti in our Park

It is disheartening when graffiti appears on 5 different pieces of park property which volunteers worked tirelessly to have installed for the betterment of their community.  Although we don't wish to give the artist the attention he/she is looking for, this blog post is to let you know that this form of vandalism is occurring in the Glen Allan neighbourhood in Sherwood Park.  By tagging public property, it becomes costly for tax payers and property owners.

Here are some ways to protect property from graffiti:
  • Enhanced Lighting
Improving lighting in your backyard (ideally motion sensors) serves as a natural form of surveillance.
  • Keep it Clean
Broken fences, litter, overgrown landscaping, etc. invite delinquent behavior.  Take part in keeping your property clean as well as joining the Gilmore Park Community League in their annual Pitch In Clean-up Event to maintain a positive effect on the community by assisting in deterring graffiti vandalism.
  • Improved Security
Have a presence in the community - when going for a walk keep an eye out for unwanted behavior.  Or establish/join a block patrol in your neighbourhood to reduce the incidents of graffiti vandalism and improve overall safety within your community. Such as through Strathcona County Citizens on Patrol http://www.sccops.ca/

When you see graffiti in your neighbourhood report it - twice
  • Call the RCMP's non-emergency line, 780-467-7741
  • Report it with Recreation Parks and Culture by calling 780-464-8470 or emailing . If you can, please take a photo and send it with your email or drop it off at 2025 Oak Street in Sherwood Park.
  • Remove it fast! By eliminating graffiti vandalism quickly, property owners show they care about their community's image and security. Also, the faster you remove it, the less likely it is that taggers will return.  Free graffiti removal kits are available from the Strathcona County Recreation Parks and Culture Department.
