Mission & Objectives

Mission:

The Gilmore Park Community League was formed to foster a safer and more connected neighbourhood by providing recreational and social opportunities for residents in the Glen Allan community of Sherwood Park, Alberta.

Objectives:

  • To keep neighbours connected by organizing annual community gatherings.
  • To keep residents informed on happenings within the community on an ongoing basis.

League History

In the spring of 2010 a few residents gathered to do a pitch-in clean-up of Gilmore Park, spearheaded by a local 5-year-old boy.  Councillor Roxanne Carr contributed to the clean-up efforts and the possibility of revitalizing the park was discussed.  It was determined that Gilmore Park was not scheduled for review until 2016, therefore two residents decided to speed up the process by taking on the project themselves.  An initial meeting was held on April 4, 2011 with residents to determine the viability, interest, and ideas needed to spark this project.  Sufficient interest was expressed therefore residents banded together to form a registered non-profit under the Alberta Societies Act called the Gilmore Park Community League in May of 2011.

Community input was collected and a vision for Gilmore Park was determined - play structures for a wider age range, community gathering spot, shaded areas and improved accessibility. Events, fundraisers and park planning efforts included door knocking, meetings, socials, potlucks, silent auctions, community garage sales, bottle drives, pizza and pasta nights and more.

Phase one of the park revitalization was completed in 2013 with the installation of new play structures. Over 100 people attended a grand opening celebration on August 7, 2013. In 2014 phase two was completed with the installation of a picnic gazebo, pathway, berm and landscaping. Residents had the opportunity to stamp their hands in the cement pad surrounding the gazebo on June 20, 2014. Over 300 people attended a Pathway Party to celebrate completion of phase two with children’s singers Bobs & Lolo on August 31, 2014.

In the spring of 2014 the Gilmore Park Community League partnered with local and international Rotary clubs and the Emmanuel Foundation to relocate the previous play equipment to Roatan, Honduras. Glen Allan residents assisted with fundraising for the relocation project and a small but mighty group of residents travelled to Honduras and the community of St. Helene for the playground installation and distribution of medical and school supplies, plus clothing and sporting goods.

Traffic safety concerns sparked the league’s involvement in community action in 2015. Actions included advocating for safe driving practices on the corner of Glenbrook Blvd. and Georgian Way. Strathcona County conducted a traffic study and it was determined that speeds in the area warranted traffic calming measures. Community consultations followed and the installation of calming measures continue to be phased in.

In 2017 a Free Little Library was built by residents and installed in Gilmore Park, and in 2018 garden boxes were brought in to Gilmore Park and the Gilmore Park Garden Group was formed. In 2019 the league partnered with Strathcona County Parent Link & Waste Management to bring an Adventure Playground to Glen Allan.

Annual gatherings continue with movie nights, pitch in clean-ups , book club, Halloween events and Christmas caroling. Additional gatherings included a Canada 150 Campout in July of 2017, Nature Play Day and a Community Safety Meeting in 2018, and a Soup Night Kick-off occured in March of 2019. During the global pandemic weekly virtual coffee chats were set-up by the league as well as a Hot Rod Parade and Community Art Project. All of these efforts continue to bring neighbours together, fostering a sense of belonging and care for one another and our shared spaces.
