Get Involved

Together we can create a safer, more connected community!

What is our community league all about?

The Gilmore Park Community League believes in neighbours knowing neighbours through meaningful connections, the importance of recreation, safety and the significance of inclusion of all residents.

Why should you care to get involved?

"A recent Statistics Canada study confirmed that there is a positive relationship between life satisfaction and individuals' feelings of belonging to their community and whether they know their neighbours. It echoes what a growing body of research is finding: that well-being is higher amongst people who have regular contact with their neighbours. Even just saying hello can have a big impact on how secure and happy we feel about where we live."

Attending a gathering, joining the board of directors, reading the e-newsletter, reaching out to meet new neighbours or helping the ones you know - it all adds up!  Connection is what makes our community great!

Glen Allan School Playground Replacement
A new playground for our community, coming in 2025!

Do you have a Glen Allan Elementary student in your family? Perhaps you have an alumni--or are you one yourself? (We are fortunate to have many long-time residents in our community!) The school at the centre of our neighbourhood's playground is currently up for replacement, as per Strathcona County’s equipment lifecycle policy. The new playground will be in place to usher in the 2025/26 school year.
The Glen Allan School Council (GASC), a non-profit organization, has the ability to fundraise and apply for grant funding to increase the available budget that the county has allotted for the playground replacement. With a successful grant application, the Alberta government’s Community Facilities Enhancement Program (CFEP) will match funds raised up to $25,000--for a total of $50,000 of additional funds to contribute to the county's base replacement of the playground.
Our fundraising goal
To make the most of this opportunity (and to get the best possible playground for our kids and the community), the council's Fund Development Committee has set a goal of raising $25,000.
How you can you support
To date, the school has raised close to $12,300. With nearly $12,700 to go by May 15, 2024 they are calling on the kindness and generosity of our community. Here are some ways that you can support the school with a donation of your time or monetary gifts:
  • Donations can be accepted at the school anytime during regular business hours. Cash or cheques (payable to GASC) can be dropped off at the school's office, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

  • Charitable tax receipts are available for donations $25.00 or higher. Cheques can be made payable to Glen Allan Elementary School (if cash, the school will require the donors full name/company name and mailing address)

  • Spread the word to your neighbours, fellow community members or local businesses. This playground redevelopment is not only a bonus for the students of the school, but to the Glen Allan community at large.
On behalf of GASC and Glen Allan School staff and families, you are thanked for your kindness and support in enhancing our wonderful community! For questions or more information, please reach out to yourgasc@gmail.com

Please complete this FORM to let GPCL know which area of Glen Allan you can clean-up and if you plan to bring a bike for a tune-up.

Dressing as Star Wars characters is optional. May the fourth be with us!

'Just in Case' Community Project

Did you know that it is most likely your neighbour or a passerby, who will be the first to respond and help you survive during an emergency? Neighbours can also provide practical and emotional support after an emergency, which increases the likelihood of a better recovery.

If there was a severe weather event, power outage, health emergency, fire, lost pet, break-in, COVID concern or active shooter, do you have contact information for at least 6 of your nearby neighbours?

The Gilmore Park Community League 'Just in Case' Community Project can help you build connections before you need them! Get prepared by signing up to be a connector on your block or cul-de-sac. Resources to connect and prepare your block will be provided. Supplies will be provided for each household on their block to make an emergency preparedness kit.

Here is how it works:

Sign up to be a Block Connector and get your block or cul-de-sac prepared 'just in case' there is an emergency situation by completing the following steps:
  • Determine your block area (6-12 houses)
  • Invite your block to participate. Using a connector card (see below):
  • Create a block contact list i.e. phone tree, what’s app group or email list
  • Ask neighbours what tools or skills they might be willing to share in the case of an emergency i.e. landline, snowblower, chainsaw, tall ladder, naloxone kit, first aid training, etc.
  • Determine who might need additional help in the case of an emergency
  • Establish a check-in plan i.e. muster point or neighbour to notify if you are ok
  • Bring your block together to build relationships and emergency kits, plus celebrate connection!

"Nowhere is community power more apparent than in the face of emergencies; when put to the test, we dig deep, self-organize, and respond.” - Cormac Russell, 2020

To participate reach out to The Gilmore Park Community League by emailing gilmorepark@live.com. This project is funded in part by a Strathcona County Community Change Grant.
